Interlibrary Loan

Before submitting an ILL request:

  • Search the Blough-Weis Library's online catalog for books in our collection.
  • Search our A-Z Periodicals List for journals that we own.
  • You may check with our Service Desk staff at 570-372-4319 to be certain we don't own a copy of what you need.
  • You may also check with your library liaison.

Request materials using the ILLiad interlibrary loan service

  • To request interlibrary loan materials use the ILLiad interlibrary loan service.
  • Your SU account ID and password is required to access ILLiad.
  • One-time registration requires completing an online contact form.
  • Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a free service for anyone SU affiliate with a SU account.
  • The Illiad interlibrary loan requests are for item not owned by the library.

For questions regarding the use of the service and/or the status of your request, please contact the ILL assistant Nici Baer at or by phone at 570-372-4016.

Interlibrary Loan Borrowing Policy

Types of Materials:
Every effort is made to fill ILL requests for most types of materials and with timely delivery.  Please be advised there are no guarantees that all requests can be filled and delivered in a timely fashion.  However, there are some items that should not be requested for loans through ILL:

  • Reference materials
  • Multi-volume sets
  • Books and media on reserve in the SU Library
  • Books (from other libraries) to be placed on reserve in the SU Library
  • Textbooks required for SU courses
  • Dissertations (limited availability only for faculty– almost always a cost for loan is involved)
  • Whole volumes or an entire issue of a journal/magazine or newspaper – request a copy of an individual article instead
  • Fragile, rare, archive and special collections
  • Books new to the library within six months

Number of Requests:

  • Students – limit of no more than ten (10) outstanding requests at a time; meaning that materials must be received in the Library before you can submit more requests.
  • Graduate Students, Faculty & Staff – no limit

Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Department if you no longer need an item.

Because we belong to several library consortiums, most requested items can be obtained at no cost.  However, there are instances that a lending library will charge for loans of materials not readily available at other libraries.  We make every attempt to get your requests at no cost, but requesting “free only” does limit obtaining requests for hard-to-find journal titles.
If you elect to proceed with an order requiring a cost to obtain, you are responsible for any charges, even if your material arrives after your deadline.

Length of Loan Periods:

  • Article copies do not need to be returned.
  • Length of loans and the number of renewals for materials are determined by the lending library and apply to all ILL borrowers, including faculty.
  • Renewal requests can be submitted by contacting the Interlibrary Loan Department prior to the due date.  There is no guarantee a renewal will be granted by the lending institution which will then result in a recall of the items.

Overdues & Fines:
It is essential to keep in good standing with lending institutions.  This depends upon your prompt return of items we borrowed for you.
If items are not returned 7 days after the due date, borrowers will be billed a $15.00 overdue fee for each item (capped at $100.00), and lose ILL borrowing privileges until all materials are returned and the overdue fine is paid.
If items are not returned by the end of the semester, borrowers will be charged a replacement fee determined by the lending institution.
In addition to the replacement fee, borrowers will be charged a processing fee of $10.00 for each item.  Once the replacement invoice is paid to the lending institution, the replacement fee is non-refundable.
A $2.00 fee will be charged for book returned without the book straps.
