What Materials go on Course Reserves?
Reserves are limited to physical items that are barcodable (print books, DVD’s, CD’s, etc.), eBooks and streaming videos purchased directly through the library.
Only items that are required reading should be placed on reserves. Recommended readings should not be requested for reserves.
Where do Materials Come From?
Faculty may request books not currently owned by the library for purchase. Those requests will be reviewed by library staff. We purchase titles for the highest enrolled courses, then investigate titles that are available as unlimited-user e-book options, and low-cost print titles that fit within our collection development standards.
The Student Government Association provides financial assistance for the purchasing of new titles as part of the Textbook Reserves Program.
Please note that there may be instances where we are unable to order all titles. Some publishers do not offer institutional licenses to all ebook content, especially textbooks. Instructors may want to consider assigning alternative readings in consultation with library staff, including Open Educational Resources, if there are concerns about students’ ability to purchase their own copies of the readings the libraries are unable to offer electronically
.
Access and Usage
Materials circulate for 3-hour periods to preserve access for all students in a course. Print materials are accessible during designated library hours. In-library use only restrictions apply to all materials. eBooks are available to access at any time.
A reserve item that is 2 days overdue is considered "lost," and the patron’s library account will be charged a replacement fee.
Library staff will enforce all policies and reserve the right to refuse service if necessary.
How to Get Items on Course Reserves
Start the process of setting up reserves by submitting requests via the online form: https://library.susqu.edu/submitreserves
Course reserves lists and materials for the first days of classes should be submitted by the following deadlines:
Lists can be submitted after deadlines and during the semester but expect at least two weeks before materials are ready. Requests are processed in the order they are received.
The library will follow up with you prior to the start of the semester to let you know which titles we have added to reserves.
Photocopying Guidelines for Course Reserves
Library staff will not make photocopies of any materials for Reserves. Students and faculty are able to create reproductions on their own, assuming those reproductions fall within the parameters of “fair use”, as outlined in The Copyright Law of the United States. The “fair use” doctrine allows students to photocopy copyrighted materials without the copyright owner’s permission if the reproduction is for certain limited, educational purposes.
This policy is subject to revision, and any changes will be communicated to library users accordingly.
