Citations and Bibliographies: Formatting Your Paper

Hanging Indent

A hanging indent, indents all the text except for the first line.

Create Hanging Indents Using Microsoft Word

According to APA, MLA, and Chicago Styles, your list of references/works cited/bibliography should be formatted as follows:

  • Each entry should begin at the left margin and any line after the first should be indented by a half inch, or about 5 spaces.
  • Microsoft Word has a feature to do this automatically, or see the instructions for manually creating a hanging indent to the right.

Running Heads

APA Style requires a running heador a short version of the title to appear in the upper-right hand corner.  In APA style, the running head may appear differently on the title page (preceded by the phrase Running Head) than on other pages of the research paper.

Page Numbers

Page numbers are used in citation styles including MLA, APA, and Chicago formats.

To insert page numbers in Microsoft Word go to insert, page number, and then choose where you want it on the page. For most citation styles the page number is in the top right hand corner of the page.

To change the font and size of your page number highlight the number, go to home, and select your font and your page number size
