Selecting a Topic

Selecting a topic can be a challenge. Remember a few things when deciding on a topic:

  • Brainstorm for ideas using personal experiences, news sources, subject guides in databases, and the reliable websites and search engines found below.
  • Choose a topic of interest to you and that you understand.
  • Make a list of keywords, synonyms, or related words that best describe your topic. When reading, make sure to note legislation by name so you can use it for more accurate searching.
  • Do a preliminary search through the government resources and library databases. Make sure there is enough information written about your topic to write your policy brief.
  • Be flexible. You may have to change your topic or refine it if you are not finding enough useful information.
