History Research Guide: Secondary Sources

Secondary Sources: General Searches

Secondary sources are books and articles which are about a particular event, period, or type of history. They are written by historians on the basis of their research into original or primary sources, and may include summaries of sources, the synthesis of information from multiple sources, and original analysis. Secondary sources are usually the best place to start your research, since they provide you with not only information about the topic but also the interpretations of modern scholars.

Use the box below to search the library catalog and many of the databases. To narrow your search to specific types of materials, use the drop-down box to select "Library Catalog" for books available in the library, "Journal Articles" to search only for articles in scholarly journals and related publications, and "Databases" to search entries in library databases.

Browsing the shelves

Instead of just searching for specific titles, you may find it useful to walk through the stacks and browse all the different titles in the same subject areas. The Blough-Weis Library organizes its books according to the Library of Congress cataloging system. Below is an outline of D through F, which includes most books on history. For a more detailed breakdown by subject, you can look at the Library of Congress outlines for D (World History and History of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Etc.), or E-F (History of the Americas).
